I survived my first winter in Canada!! Never did I think I would see the temperature on my phone get down to -30 but it did and it was damn cold. Being from Ireland the lowest temperature I think I have ever seen was maybe -10 for about 5 mins warming up the car in the morning so seeing a number that low for days on end was a new experience. I also got to see more snow than I have ever seen, it was amazing. There is just something about snow and how it blankets everything in white and just instantly makes it all look better. Everything is so peaceful and calming. I also oddly have a love of shovelling snow which many of the Canadians think is strange, I don’t know why I like it but again there is something oddly therapeutic about it and when you get a whole driveway cleared you get a great sense of accomplishment. I tried to make the most of my first winter here and I survived, after wearing many layers of clothes of course but I did it!
After my job with UPS ended after Christmas I was on the hunt for a new job and after applying for everything and anything I ended up working a ski season. This was cool as it was something that I had never done before and not something we have in Ireland. I ended up working at Lakeridge Ski Resort in the Tubepark. It was awesome, I got to work with some really cool people and do something I have never done before. Tube parks are not something that we have at home because well we don’t get snow, so it was my first time seeing one which was cool. I also got to go down it for the first time of many that I would while working there. It was both terrifying and fun at the same time. Over the course of working there I got to go down in tubes by myself and also with the other staff there. It was actually part of our job, not to bad. For the most part we only worked about 3-4 days a week which meant we had lots of time for other activities. It also limited the days we had to wake up at 6am which is always a good thing. It was a great way to spend my winter.
One of the perks of working at a ski resort is that you get to use the resort for free, which meant we got season passes for the hills. This meant that only working like 3 days a week was awesome because it gave me lots of time to work on my snowboarding. It’s something that I have fallen in love with. I am also proud to say that thanks to a good teacher (Jasmine) and lots of time spent on the hill I can now say that I can snowboard. I am by no means an expert but I can do pretty much every hill at Lakeridge, which I am so happy with. This took 2 months and lots of time spent on my butt but I can now confidently ride down the hills and even hit a little box in the park, ooohh yes I went there. It has been amazing learning something new and falling in love with it. I can’t wait for next season to come so I can get back to the slopes and maybe invest in my own board.
Now that the season is over I’m relaxing and getting ready for the next adventure. In about 4 weeks I will be flying off to Alberta to work in summer camp (Camp Warwa) , yes I am going back. Camp I think is a place that I feel most myself and at home so I can’t wait to get back to it. Also as spring is here I feel renewed and wanting to get back into doing things, well 2 things that I have thought of. The first being, running, which i oddly really like so I want to try start running a few times a week. Secondly , I want to get back into vlogging and uploading on my Youtube channel. I am going to attempt to do some weekly vlogs and see how it goes. While writing this I have thought of a third which is try and keep this blog updated for all of you guys, well mostly my family and friends ( I see you Mam). They are the plans for the next few weeks before I head to camp because that’s when my life will get crazy again.
